Temporary & Extended-Stay Housing for Fire Evacuees
If you have been displaced by the fire and believe you'll need lodging for more than a few nights, consider contacting your homeowners or renters insurance company before committing to a long-term stay whenever possible.
Depending on your policy and the circumstances of your displacement, you may have Additional Living Expense (ALE) or Loss of Use coverage that can help cover eligible temporary living expenses.
Save your receipts from the beginning. This may include receipts for lodging, meals, laundry, pet boarding and other additional expenses caused by your displacement.
What to Ask When Calling a Hotel
Tell the hotel that you have been displaced or evacuated because of the wildfire and ask whether they offer:
- Wildfire evacuee or emergency rates
- Weekly or monthly rates
- Waived or reduced resort fees
- Pet-friendly accommodations
- Kitchen or kitchenette options
- On-site laundry
- Insurance or direct-billing arrangements

Large-animal facilities can fill quickly during widespread evacuations, so please call ahead whenever possible.
If Your Home Has Been Damaged by the Fire
If you have experienced property damage, there are several steps worth taking as soon as it is safe to do so.
Contact your insurance company and open a claim. Ask specifically about Additional Living Expense or Loss of Use coverage.
Document everything. Once authorities have said it is safe to return, photograph and video your property before cleanup begins.
Save every receipt associated with your evacuation and displacement.
Create an inventory of damaged or destroyed belongings. Old photos and videos of your home, online shopping histories, credit card statements and even previous real estate listing photos may help establish what was inside the property.
Keep a claim log. Write down the dates of conversations with your insurer, the names of representatives you speak with, your claim number and any instructions you're given.
Unless something poses an immediate health or safety risk, speak with your insurance company before disposing of damaged property or beginning significant repairs.

Returning Home After a Wildfire
Do not return to an evacuated property until authorities have said it is safe to do so.
Fire-damaged properties can contain hazards that aren't immediately obvious, including unstable structures, damaged electrical or gas systems, hot spots, ash and debris.
Before beginning major cleanup or repairs:
- Photograph the property thoroughly.
- Contact your insurance carrier.
- Ask what emergency mitigation work is authorized.
- Be cautious of unsolicited contractors.
- Verify contractor licensing.
- Keep copies of estimates, contracts and receipts.
- Avoid making large deposits or signing contracts under pressure.

Smoke & Air Quality
Even if you are outside an evacuation area, wildfire smoke can affect air quality throughout Northern Nevada.
The EPA's AirNow Fire and Smoke Map provides current information about wildfire smoke and air-quality conditions.
When smoke is heavy, follow current public-health guidance and consider limiting unnecessary outdoor exposure.
Medication & Medical Needs
If you evacuated without an essential prescription, contact your pharmacy or prescribing provider as soon as possible and explain that you have been displaced by an emergency.
Nevada 211 can also help locate health care, prescription assistance, transportation and other health-related community resources.

How You Can Help
Northern Nevada has an incredible way of coming together when our neighbors need help.
During a disaster, however, large amounts of unsolicited physical donations can sometimes overwhelm shelters and emergency agencies. Before bringing supplies to an evacuation center, call Washoe 311 to find out what is currently needed and where donations are being accepted.
Consider donating through established disaster-relief organizations such as the American Red Cross. Blood donations through organizations such as the American Red Cross and Vitalant can also help support ongoing community needs.
Preparing to Evacuate: What Should You Take?
If you are currently under an evacuation warning and have time to prepare safely, gather essentials such as identification, insurance information, medications, medical equipment, phones and chargers, credit/debit cards, important records, pet supplies, clothing and toiletries.
For families with children, don't forget comfort items and essential children's supplies.
Irreplaceable photographs and keepsakes can be gathered only if you have adequate time to do so safely.
Never delay an evacuation to gather belongings. If you receive an evacuation order, your safety comes first.
